Chapter 16

Wednesday

Michael Glover sipped his scotch. It was only noontime, but he felt that he’d put in a good day’s work already. Years of planning were finally coming to fruition. Late the night before, he’d picked up the CEO of Macleod Brandt at the Brunswick Executive Airport. He’d spent most of the night, and all of the morning, discussing strategy with her.

Marisa Wilkes had recently become the head of Macleod Brandt, the largest military contractor in the world, rising with the appointment to become one of the most powerful people who walked the earth. With a $50 billion dollar annual turnover and given its role as the main supplier of weapons in the United States, the company was a juggernaut with a power all its own. She wore a black-knit sweater with a rounded collar and all three buttons buttoned. Gold plated steel huggie hoops clutched her ears on either side. Her hair was pulled back in a bun.

Just an hour earlier, her predecessor at Macleod Brandt, Deputy Secretary of Defense, Randall Ryan, had arrived. Ryan had flown into Portsmouth and driven up to Brunswick, so as to not be spotted meeting with, or having a flight log record similar to, Marisa Wilkes, as this was all highly unethical. His schedule said he was taking a vacation day on the southern coast of Maine. It was said that this slender man would soon be assuming the position of Secretary of Defense, as the man currently in that position was being not so gently prodded to resign. When that happened, it would be much more difficult to disappear from the public eye for a day of back-room dealing.

Just ten minutes earlier, Senator Margaret Mercer had shown up with her husband, Maxwell. The five of them, plus two personal assistants, now sat in the living room, all with glasses of Macallan eighteen-year-old Sherry Oak. It was not every day that people hosted a luncheon of people of this magnitude, and Glover allowed himself to revel in the moment. The kitchen counters held sandwiches, soups, green and pasta salads, and a variety of desserts from Wild Flour down on Maine Street. He only hoped that he was allowed to stay for the guts of the conversation. Glover wondered who carried the second most clout in the room, the contestants being soon-to-be Secretary of Defense and Senator Mercer. There was no doubt in his mind that Marisa Wilkes firmly held the number one spot.

Deputy Secretary of Defense, Randall Ryan, was sitting on the couch conversing with Maxwell Mercer. His blonde hair was receding, leaving a gleaming patch of scalp up front. This gave his face an unnaturally long look, offset by his wide mouth and piercing blue eyes. It was said that he often golfed with the President, but knew enough not to shine too much on the course. That might have been his greatest gift, knowing when to hide his light under a bushel, all while carefully advancing his way through promotions and
